Around School [pt. 4]

I haven’t shared anything from the classroom in quite some time… Well, here is the bulletin board decoration activity that my 3rd grade class did at the beginning of the year. The premise was simple – every student got a blank “person template“. With the given materials, they needed to design and decorate the person to look like themselves at age 100. Then they needed to write at least one sentence about themselves at age one hundred (easy for most of my class, challenging for some). They are pretty amusing to read and I think they turned out quite well, which is a good thing, because we are stuck with them until we do another bulletin board activity!

Check them out:

Around School [Pt. 3]

Every week, we have one 40 minute “activity” class. It is just a fun class to get the students involved in a game, activity, or a craft. With about 40 weeks in the school year, it can be hard to think of enough fun, manageable activities for 36 students that don’t need too many expensive materials. A few weeks ago we made “Straw Structures”. Students were placed in teams of six with about 100 straws per team, a roll of tape, and the instructions to build the tallest, strongest tower they could make with those materials.

A few students were confused at first… what are we supposed to be doing?

Some of the students made a quick plan and immediately got into teamwork mode.

Others began assembling individual portions of the tower to be assembled later, as a team.

Some students didn’t help a whole lot, but still LOVED STRAWS!

Most of the teams quickly learned how to design their tower for strength and stability.

… but not all of them!

All the teams had fun….

… but this team WON! Their tower was the tallest in the class, and even withstood the “Earthquake test”.

To celebrate the end of the grade 2 school year, my students had a sandwich party. They were so excited to make me meat-less sandwiches in every interesting combination of pickles, mayonnaise, jam, peanut butter, lettuce, egg salad, potato salad, and tomatos they could come up with!

The girls all brought their own aprons to school, because things got messy.

They were all proud of their sandwich creations!

Some of the students told me they ate 5 sandwiches! I bet there were some stomachaches later in the day.

Of course, every sandwich party has a group that doesn’t like crust!

All packed up and ready to take it home!

Around School [Pt. 1]

It’s a new series! It’s about people, events, and things that happen at our school.

Stop Being So Creepy, Angels!

Stop Being So Creepy, Angels!

Our school is Seventh Day Adventist, so there are pictures of Jesus, angels, and sheep all over the school (so nothing different than what I grew up with in Christian schools). But this sign just makes me laugh every time I see it. Not because angels are funny, but because this sign is on the stall door in the men’s bathroom. They should allow us a bit more privacy.
